Power-cuts last week due error during works: three new distribution centre and new Gozo connection to roll out soon

Speaking to MaltaToday today, Prime Minister Robert Abela said last week’s power cuts were caused by human error during works carried out by Enemalta workers at the Magħtab Terminal Station. According to Enemalta, the error occurred during an intervention on a circuit breaker, triggering the electricity system’s automatic protection mechanism and disrupting power supplies across large parts of Malta and Gozo. The Prime Minister described the mistake as genuine and said he would not be censoring any workers over the incident.

The Prime Minister also said that three new distribution centres and an additional electricity connection between Malta and Gozo will soon be rolled out.

Enemalta’s wider plan includes two new 33kV submarine cables between the islands, each approximately eight kilometres long, as well as a separate, higher-capacity 132kV link currently in the planning and preparatory stages. The two projects are intended to strengthen Gozo’s electricity supply and improve the network’s capacity.
