Għajnsielem edge Xagħra United in five-goal thriller to extend lead at the top

Għajnsielem FC strengthened their position at the top of the BOV Gozo Football League First Division after defeating Xagħra United 3-2 in an entertaining Matchday Seven encounter at the Gozo Stadium on Friday.

The victory lifted Għajnsielem to 15 points from six matches, five clear of second-placed Qala Saints, who have a game in hand.

Għajnsielem made a strong start and took the lead in the 13th minute through Ewertton Jose Spirandelli Costa, better known as Tom Tom.

The league leaders doubled their advantage in the 28th minute when Alexandre Galiano Lazarini inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net, leaving Xagħra facing a difficult task.

However, Xagħra responded impressively and reduced the deficit just four minutes later when Ibrahim Salis converted a penalty to make it 2-1.

The visitors completed their comeback in the 36th minute when Salis struck again, scoring his second goal in the space of four minutes to restore parity.

With the match seemingly heading towards the interval on level terms, Għajnsielem regained the advantage deep into first-half stoppage time.

Jesus Maria Meneses Sabater, known as Chechu, found the net in the fourth minute of added time to put the hosts 3-2 ahead.

That goal ultimately proved decisive as Għajnsielem held on throughout the second half to secure their fifth victory in six league matches.

The defeat left Xagħra United in sixth place with four points from six matches, just one ahead of bottom-placed Sannat Lions.

Għajnsielem, meanwhile, continue to set the pace at the top of the standings, although Qala Saints and Xewkija Tigers remain within striking distance with a match in hand.
