Yesterday during the budget speech, the Minister of Finances pre-empted our question by saying that the government intends to invest more in renewable energy by investing in renewable energy projects in North Africa. Essentially, the Finance Minister was speaking about solar-panels.
Owning costly infrastructure in North Africa would leave us exposed to blackmail and also security risks. Not to mention that you need thousands of solar panels to produce energy at scale to make the project worth its dime. It is also a project that would need regular maintenance and work so this won’t be “free energy”.
The government shouldn’t be taking risks by placing our core and essential infrastructure in North Africa and neither should it plan to rely solely on renewable energy and soalr farms. Renewable energy sources should be seen as an addition to a core energy infrastructure that guarantees regular and cheap electricity.
A more ideal solution would be to build a power gas or nuclear-powered plant in Italy where the rights of the property would be guaranteed and the state would not e exposed to blackmail by warlords and authoritarian political figures.
The government literally has no solutions to produce and source cheap energy for the country and this is an essential matter that regards our sovereignty and national security. It is by far more important and essential than distributing free cheques.
