There was a lot of cheering and shouting for Labour earlier today in Marsaxlokk during a political rally. The Prime Minister praised the Finance Minister’s work, reiterated his assurance that energy prices would remain stable, and said that the Nationalist Party couldn’t give the same assurance because it didn’t believe in them.
The usual partisan talk.
The Finance Minister, on the other hand, doubled down on the policies he announced in the budget and accused his critics over his TCN tariffs of being hypocrites, as overpopulation is now no longer a concern.
The Finance Minister said that his measures were not intended to target a specific national or racial group, but rather a system of cheap labour from which many companies had benefited greatly. He said that the government could no longer shoulder this burden and that these businesses had to increase their salaries.
Minister Clyde Caruana also said that Labour’s measures would ensure the party’s fifth victory at the polls, echoing the populist spirit he has evoked since the general election.
The Finance Minister is fiscally correct with his measures if he intends to up the wages of businesses and sectors and increase productivity, however it has to be seen whether the government’s economic policy will be in line with the fiscal measures.
