Description
Published by Żgħażagħ taħt l-Art (ŻTA) in 1994, No Sex Please: We’re Maltese was the most deviant and forward-looking publication in the early 1990s, challenging social mores and taboos in a society that was still ultra-conservative. This was a time when the introduction of divorce was still unthinkable, and speaking in favour of abortion was considered hellish and blasphemous.
The youths of ŻTA were the rebels of the day, and the contrarians of a society that was still resisting change in the preservation of its stereotypes. The book reads like a semi-manifesto with a satirical tone, but it mostly tells the facts and truths about sexuality and relationships that today we take for granted.
Published under the author’s name of “The Moralist”, the author had to remain anonymous to avoid persecution and discrimination. Today we can reveal his name: Saviour Sammut was a schoolteacher who went on to become a best-selling author with his books such as Xandru, Miżżewweġ u Gay and Il-Banka tal-Isperma. The book came with funny caricatures in a style that is unmistakably that of Steve Bonello, who today is an established artist in Malta.
This book is a collector’s item and a historical gem for lovers of Maltese history and Melitensia. We have limited copies, but we also want to make it available to anyone, so we have kept a very low price — but don’t be fooled. This is a highly valuable item that may very well be placed in a museum in the near future.
