When I read about the news that Gordon Manche is being allowed to abuse the law to bring people to court for mocking him, I ask myself,
In whose interest is this allowed to happen? Clearly, the police have no business in using harassment laws to take people to court for satire or mocking other people. The police won’t only lose their case, but the way they are proceeding to file charges in these convoluted cases is also probably unconstitutional. The constitution provides a clear bias towards freedom of speech when interpreting Maltese laws.
I’m not going to ask lawyers and get technical for now because it is late (for me), but this situation did not exist before Robert Abela became Prime Minister. In addition, the reason why MPs are silent is that Robert Abela’s policy on free speech is: the less free speech, the better.
The government has no interest to amend the law to make sure that these kinds of prosecutions stop taking place. The government is even going ahead to implement a very authoritarian press bill that will cause more prosecutions against journalists and satirists for breaking “the right to privacy”.
Free speech in Malta is deteriorating so fast that we can’t even mock a fraudulent, homophobic-gay-looking pseudo-pastor of a bullshit cult religion.
The young generation of progressive socialists winging Robert Abela should be very proud. Prosit, guys.
