Disclaimer. I am lucky enough to be able to write this because I have the means to use private hospitals, choose my doctors, and even choose the particular country from where I am treated. I have used hospitals in at least five different countries in three different continents. I have used a Maltese doctor once at a private hospital for an operation that required excessive skill. I have Maltese doctors who are very good friends of mine and who may also agree with my assessment below. I have nothing personal against Maltese doctors. I’m just an observer of society writing my thoughts.
I have a very intuitive reaction of disgust and hatred toward bullies as they wield their power and force themselves unto others. It is probably because I was bullied as a young boy for being thin and having a darker skin color compared to my friends. Getting bullied as a young boy helped me realise that pain is not that bad after all and that the body may as well fight back instead of cowering unto itself for protection. Basically, I grew up without the fear of getting punched in the face, so that made me also capable of punching back. This is one of the times were I decided to opt for a punch guided by my intuitive feelings of disgust.
I’ve long known what makes many Maltese satisfied in our particular society. In a society that has a recent history of poverty, illiteracy, and downright stupidity with a backdrop of a poor economy, many Maltese men chose the easy option of taking a career as a lawyer, doctor, or architect because there was little else to choose. Yet, such choices were not only made for financial ends but they were also made for the sake of status and social gratification. Maltese professionals used to be well respected, not only because they had a higher income than many other Maltese men, but also because their profession symbolised intelligence and wisdom in a society that didn’t know how to read and write. And for many years, Maltese professionals had extensive influence and reach in our society for these very reasons, and as we also know, many of them abused this extensive power they have had not only to commit grave crimes but also to increase their power and reach in society.
I’m saying all of this because the recent abortion bill by the government is a great betrayal by Chris Fearne to do the right thing, but Fearne is dragged down by the Prime Minister whose decision is taken according to what the Maltese doctors are asking him to do. Maltese doctors have demanded Robert Abela change Fearne’s initially proposed bill to decriminalise abortion in the case the woman’s health is in danger, into a bill that only allows medical abortion if the woman’s life is in jeopardy. Doctors are also forming a board to decide on every application instead of having the decision approved by the woman’s personal consultant. What a fucking power trip these Maltese doctors are on.
Let’s be absolutely clear. There is no genuine moral position within the medical community that sees abortion as murder because abortion is a worldwide medically approved practice. Most Maltese doctors oppose the introduction of abortion because it gives them power – a power they have lost over the years as society grew richer and more educated. The number of people Maltese professionals could impress and influence simply by default of their career has dwindled down considerably over the years. Today, we are richer and have more options. Even doctors themselves have more options. They work abroad and in Malta, we have many foreign doctors working in our public hospitals. The brutal reality is this: Maltese doctors are no longer indispensable for our society. Technically, the government can replace them overnight with cheaper and better alternatives. These are not the 1970s. This is a world that is smaller in distance, more connected, and with much more competition and options available.
Yet, Maltese doctors still want that traditional power they have had in society, so they are projecting this need onto women. And for what? These wicked assholes are wielding their power in the most classist and vile way because their daughters will definitely be flown into the best European hospitals for an abortion if they wanted one, but Maltese women who can’t afford to travel will be dependent on their whims. What a fucking travesty. And for shame on the Prime Minister who has not only been completely and totally useless and criminal where leadership was needed but for abdicating on an issue that he should be very much well knowledgeable about given that he has a daughter. Bloody useless idiotic git.
You’re all a bunch of bloody wicked idiots on a power trip, cheap and useless and you deserve to be shamed. And Maltese doctors for shame. A bunch of bullies who are successfully wielding their power in society because they found a dumb Prime Minister in place, malleable enough for their interests. I would have thrown this lot of swine out of the office and told them to leave the country if they didn’t like it. Maltese doctors are feeling entitled to have control over women’s bodies because their job entails saving lives. Supposedly, we have to respect their opinion and have our public health system designed according to their wishes instead of according to the needs of society. There are few professional bodies in Malta who have this overreach, except for maybe lawyers. This all comes from a great sense of entitlement and impunity for abuse and control.
Now, let’s put some context here about these medical professionals who are leading the moral fight in our society for what is good. For many years and still, until today, the public health system has been clogged with long waiting lists because many Maltese consultants prefer to focus on their private practice while still working at the public hospital. Basically, if you needed something from a consultant at the NHS, you would get it quicker if you paid him at his private practice. This fraudulent and abusive practice is widespread, yet these people pretend, today to tell us what is good and right in our society.
Now, of course, this problem is generational in nature. Young Maltese doctors don’t have the complexities of their older peers and they are not becoming doctors to wield power and influence because today, there is none to wield. The Medical Association President, Martin Balzan is a dying breed. His kind is just wasting our time as they cling to their fading power and influence in society. When they will be dead we will be literally better off as the new doctors will be more willing to offer their services to women without prejudice.
