There are two very impeachable magistrates right now – one is Donatello Frendo Dimech and the other is Joe Mifsud. The case of Donatella Frendo Dimech involves allegations of corruption, cover-up, holding irregular meetings with the lawyers of the defendants of her court, bullying the prosecution, dining with the defendants, and distorting the court process in favor of her defendants. Donatella Frendo Dimech has also been in contact with the Prime Minister through Whatsapp.
The other impeachable magistrate is Joe Mifsud –ย a magistrate who makes a mockery of justice, abuses justice to relay his zealous religious views, and even compromised the security of a prosecutor as he forced her to stand next to the defendant in the court docket.
Both of these magistrates share a common trait: a total disdain and disrespect for the prosecutor. Their disdain for prosecutors is not ideologically driven by some sort of anarchic anti-prison ideology – they are both hungry for power and they love to wield it, so they see prosecutors in their way to conjure up a sort of justice on their own. Both of them begged politicians for their jobs – Joe Mifsud begged Joseph Muscat and Donatella Frendo Dimech begged Owen Bonnici when he was Justice Minister. Both of them have a sense of entitlement and think they are smarter than everyone else.
Donatella Frendo Dimech’s case is much more serious than Mifsud’s, so far, and based on what we know. What has been revealed about her and her behavior is already very shocking but there are, still, more stories about her to come out.
Magistrates can be impeached with a two-thirds majority vote in Parliament, but Donatella Frend Dimech is shielded both by the government and her allies in the Opposition such as Joe Giglio and Alex Borg. She is also very convenient for the government given she oversees money-laundering cases. Both of them are not going anywhere despite their irregular behaviour, but this should not be the case if we are looking to reconstruct our nation out of its current crisis.
