How’s positive engagement doing?

Today, the scenes of Macron gesticulating with Xi Jinping in China already look extremely absurd as the Chinese Politburo member Li Hongzhong watches the nuclear-armed parade with Russia’s Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu on Kim Jong Un’s balcony. I’m sure that “positive engagement” or whatever it is called has contributed dearly to the belligerent Axis of Evil to curb their imperialistic and warring plans.

And indeed, how absurdly stupid does Germany’s and France’s campaign to bring European companies to China look now that Western capital was busy fleeing China during a brutal political crackdown? Just recently, the Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang disappeared, and Xi Jinping speaks of war.ย  Meanwhile, Macron faces the demands for the withdrawal of French tropps in Niger with a pro-Russian coup in Niger that toppled its democratically-elected President. Maybe, champagne diplomacy has real-world consequences and Western Europe needs to be increasingly aware that not only do we have adversaries, but they are also dangerous to us and our interests.

Europe will be at risk of losing defense commitments from the United States with the prospect of a Republican Presidency and with Ron De Santis (much worse would the situation be if Trump would be elected but it is less likely).ย  Europe is late in augmenting its own defensive capabilities and lessening its dependence on the US on defence matters. At the same time, we are failing to serve our roles as allies with the USA when needed with regard to China and this will cost us dearly. Europe can’t expect the US to provide aid to Ukraine (a European issue) while at the same time, the President of France goes to China to tell the Chinese that he doesn’t mind if they start a war to invade Taiwan. Macron seems to think he is heroic enough to take on the world’s problems on his own, but now, the fool has the US pushing his interests in Niger because he isn’t able to do it by himself.

Bloody genius. Macron thought he would go to China and make a name for himself as the leader who brought world peace and he ended up being the West’s cuck. Maybe, and finally, the realization is setting in that positive engagement with belligerent states doesn’t work.

Well said. All this foolery is just paving the way for more hard-line right wing factions to gain influence in Europe and I dont think thats going to help EU-US relations.
