At this stage, corruption is no longer just a means to enrich oneself, but has now become a very essential prerequisite for the Labour Party to remain in power and this is why Robert Abela is staunchly defending customer care units. The Prime Minister’s comments about justifying constituents asking favours from Ministers were made in full awareness that such practices need to continue in order for Labour to retain its hold on power. This is Robert Abela’s fight for survival, and it has got nothing to do with principles, morality, progress, or improving things. Had we had a normal Prime Minister, following the unraveling of the driving licenses racket, all customer care units in ministerial secretariats would have been dismantled.
The reality is that ever since Robert Abela lost his control over his cabinet and parliamentary group in July, the chaos and the infighting in the Labour Party continued to grow hotter. Robert Abela is totally isolated from the Party other than his inner clique which is composed of bandits and opportunists who will dump him in the first moment he is in trouble. Robert Abela can’t trust anyone in the Labour Party right now other than his close family members.
The Minister for Energy is not on speaking terms with the Prime Minister while the Prime Minister hates his Minister for Finances. The Minister for Finance knows that the Minister for Energy is incompetent, so they are also not on speaking terms. The Prime Minister also hates his deputy and his Minister for Health and would like to oust him, although he can’t because Chris Fearne is the most popular Minister in the cabinet. The Minister for Transport is incompetent and is not on speaking terms with the Prime Minister either. Then there is the Minister for Foreign Affairs who tries his best not to get involved in local politics or with any other Minister at all. You end up with Silvio Schembri and Roderick Galdes running around the Prime Minister like headless chickens waiting for some feed to fall on the ground. Or what about Byron Camilleri and Clifton Grima who are loyal servants to the Prime Minister but are doing their best not to appear in public with him so that they are not associated with this clique? I can go on.
It’s total fear and loathing in the house of Labour.
