In the past few years, as we went through a Jungle Rules-styled construction boom, we have also witnessed an increasing rate of construction workers’ deaths. As a result, the Occupational Health and Safety Authority has been under scrutiny with its previous CEO Mark Gauci claiming that the authority was under fire by the Prime Minister himself for simply doing its job. Mark Gauci even claimed that the authority was intentionally kept toothless and powerless. Lowering construction industry standards was done intentionally to appease the many contractors enjoying the benefits of Jungle Rules.
Mark Gauci is an experienced professional with decades of experience in health and safety and was respected by all quarters in the industry. His replacement, Josianne Cutajar is a Labour appointee and a previous general practitioner who was appointed as an executive by the Labour government at Saint Vincent De Paul Hospital in 2013. It’s unclear how she ended up in this position and how she even accepted such a post given her lack of qualifications and experience in the post, but my sources tell me that she was suggested by David Xuereb: Robert Abela’s friend who is meddling in the regulations of the construction industry on behalf of the government.
Things will only keep getting worse before they get better. Robert Abela is ruling the country as if he is playing a self-centered game and appointing his incompetent allies to sensitive and important posts is part of his normal routine. Robert has a supply of useful fools who are ready to do his bidding, and it is thanks to these fools that he is able to hold whatever little power he has left. Incredibly, these useful fools find no problem in shaming themselves by taking on roles they are not fit for, despite the obvious reputational risk they take as they expose themselves as totally opportunistic and unprincipled individuals.
