Young Labour Party activist Neil Baldacchino has built an IT business called Darttek Ltd. thanks to direct orders from the government. Neil Baldacchino who runs Darttek but owns it partly with his mother, Maria Dolores Baldacchino, is just one of the many supporters of Robert Abela whose loyalty and support have been rewarded.
Darttek, gets its business thanks to the help from his father, Saviour Baldacchino, who is also a Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA) director (supervising the government’s IT systems). As it happens, another MITA employee, Roderick Paul Buhagiar, today is employed as a software developer at the Regulator for Energy and Water Services which is one of the biggest clients of Darttek.
The company is literally a family business that runs on government direct orders, masterminded by the father, Saviour Baldacchino who fronts and represents the company in meetings with government entities whilst also doubling as a MITA director. On top of that, Darttek provides extremely faulty and bug-infested software which has to be maintained and repaired on a regular basis incurring higher bills for the public entities.
So, this is not just a clear case of corruption and trading in influence, apart from the potential fraud and money laundering, Saviour Baldacchino as director of MITA has used his public position to enrich himself at the expense of the public, apart from flagrantly using his family to front his business interests. That’s quite a good deal for him. As a director of a public entity he is supposed to be capable of raising capital and generating revenues, instead, he is literally using his public position to pay himself extra to sponsor his own family business.
