As I write this, the IDF has entered Northern Gaza as part of a large ground invasion. As expected and predicted, Israel has fought back against Hamas and the Palestinians in a cruel and vengeful manner that has left thousands of innocent children and civilians dead. 29 journalists have also been killed (many of them affiliated with the pro-Hamas Al-Aqsa TV but many others were independent). Israel is committing war crimes by firing on civilians, but so is Hamas which uses civilians as human shields and use civilian areas for their military operations. The left’s accusation that Israel is committing a “genocide” against Palestinians is malicious and obviously not true, but it’s essential in the antisemitic narrative that demands the Jews to dismantle their state and leave Palestine. What’s true is that Israel does not have any consideration for Palestinian lives as it fights this war – wrong and immoral, but rather radically different from committing genocide.
Israel has stated that it wants to defeat Hamas and Europe should stand by Israel in this aim. The idea that there should be a ceasefire is nonsensical when the primary security objective is to eradicate Hamas. In fact, Europe should intervene in Gaza and make sure that Israel actually defeats and destroys Hamas in its entirety. Europe should also intervene in Gaza to ensure that the Palestinians have their own state and safeguard their future ambitions for a democratic and normal society – in contrast to a society governed by Islamo-fascists and the corrupt Palestinian Authority. There is unanimous agreement in the international community that a two-state solution is the only possible peaceful outcome and the Palestinians have no other choice but to accept this outcome.
Europe can’t reach its foreign policy objectives in their entirety without a navy (projecting force) and the UN resolution that has been passed on a ceasefire is also useless, apart from being nonsensical. Israel is unrestrained in its war. Antisemitism and isolation have turned the Israeli government insular and vengeful in its worldview – Europe bears a lot of responsibility for this. Had Israel been more integrated with European trade, politics, and economy Israel would have had much bigger incentives to comply with international law because after all, Israel is also a liberal democracy with whom positive engagement can actually work.
The Mediterranean Sea is above all a European responsibility because we pay the biggest price for whatever happens in it and this means that Israel has to inevitably abide by our legal framework as well. This should apply to Egypt too. By international law, no one should deny the right for civilians access to food, water, and a safe passage out of a conflict. Europe can easily make our Mediterranean neighbours comply with international law if we actually had the force to enforce the rules.
