Stelios Bekiros, a professor at the University of Malta, appears to be involved in a very serious dispute with the University of Malta that has escalated to the point where he alleges that he has received threats on his life from the University’s Director of Finances, Mark Debono. The professor seems to have filed a police report and is pursuing the matter in court.
Professor Bekiros has sent a letter to the Minister for Education alleging that the University of Malta is embezzling EU funds, and the University of Malta seems to be retaliating against the professor by cutting him off from the mentioned EU projects and the University’s administrative staff.
It will be interesting to see what happens to this case because rarely if ever do we see local academics protest against serious irregularities at the University of Malta, despite its bad reputation for nepotism and corruption and for being an entity that is directly controlled by the Labour government.
