I would expect the Ambassador to know her stuff before making outlandish statements backed by no evidence whatsoever. Westerners seem to want to delude themselves that somehow Hamas can become a legitimate organisation that works in the interests of Palestinians.
Hamas had already told the world that it had reformed itself before launching a war against Israel which saw its members killing and raping any civilian and living human being they encountered. We’ve already been there and this is why Hamas can never be trusted again if there is any future hope for peace in the region. Westerners are also deluding themselves that Palestinians themselves want peace with Israel when the situation on the ground is quite the contrary. The Palestinians who oppose Hamas for now seem to be a minority.
European diplomats should focus their efforts on ensuring that Israel complies with international law in its conduct of war and rebuilding bridges with the Palestinian Authority. The IDF is potentially committing war crimes and calls should be made for extensive investigations on Netanyahu and cabinet members on whether they committed war crimes. At the same time, Qatar should be held responsible for hosting and sponsoring Hamas.
Many diplomats are trying to take virtuous positions on this conflict without supporting the right and legal course of action: to hold accountable both Hamas, Qatar and the Israeli leadership for the ongoing carnage.
