As stated several times over the past few years, the Labour government has reached a point where it is no longer attempting to conceal its blatant corruption and rent-seeking practices. Corruption has become solely a matter of public relations for Labour, where an action is deemed right or wrong based solely on the electorate’s acceptance, regardless of its actual ethical or legal standing.
This is why Labour and Rbert Abela especially, have no qualms in appointing the very sleazy Charles Buhagiar as chairman of the Building and Construction Consultative Council. He was previously CEO of the same entity having milked it for public contractsย and after the property housing the said entity was also expropriated for a corrupt deal with a relative to one of his clients. As of lately, Charles Buhagiar was trying to legalise a very illegal and damaging practice by a contractor who was dumping construction waste in a valley.
The reality is that Charles Buhagiar has had a reputation for sleaze ever since the time of Alfred Sant and indeed, Labour Party officials had sidelined him until his popularity faded and failed to get elected in parliament. To appease him, they gave him public jobs and contracts, and today, he remains a useful tool for conducting broken government policy that favors the construction lobby.
