Robert Abela will be remembered mainly for crashing down the Labour Party from power, leaving a massive record of public debt in our history, making the state ungovernable, and giving impunity to corrupt politicians and organised criminals (apart from accelerating the destruction of the environment and the quality of life). He will be remembered as one of the worst Prime Minister in history.
So, it is no surprise that Robert Abela is still polling badly with figures showing that he has already given away as much as half of the Labour Party’s support. The solution is obvious to everyone who can see, but the Nationalist Party is still dragging its feet over it. PN is not making any inroads and judging by its track record it will remain stuck at the same place, unable to defeat the Labour Party in the general election.
Judging by our electoral history, the solution to this mess is very simple. When the Labour Party was stuck for an extended period with the same amount of support under Alfred Sant’s leadership, it took a leadership change to turn the tables. Indeed, as soon as Joseph Muscat was elected leader of the Labour Party, the polls flipped overnight and the Labour Party went from being the minority party to having the majority support of the electorate. This can happen as well to PN today if they choose the right leader.
Bernard Grech is very aware that he has to step aside from the leadership to allow someone new to turn the tide, yet the PN is also facing a challenge in finding its future leader. So far, Franco Debono, who has been the only one to openly announce interest in the post, doesn’t strike me as the ideal candidate.
