Embattled champagne socialists unite! You have everything to lose, except for your integrity (they already lost it long ago).
This is an excellent example of posturing and the extraction of political currency from the Palestinian issue by two blatant opportunists who have no relation to the conflict and know little to nothing about it.
Pedro Sanchez and Robert Abela are pushing for “a lasting ceasefire”. One is governing the country with criminals who perpetuated crimes against the state, and the other is a criminal who is protecting the criminals who committed crimes against the state. Both of them, now, need the Palestinians to save them so they are out for the Palestinian and Arab constituencies (both significant in their respective countries).
The problem with this position is very simple. Ceasefire with who? With Hamas? Hamas is a designated terrorist organisation and a ceasefire was already in place for many years with Hamas promising it was reforming itself as it held talks in Qatar. How is it practically possible to execute a ceasefire with an organisation whose sole purpose and existence is aimed to fight a genocidal war? This position is bizarre and confusing, to say the least, and it mostly comes from political convenience. The reality on the ground is that there will never be a lasting peace until Hamas is removed from the equation, and instead, Europe should put its efforts into making sure that Israel complies with international law.
Ironically, Robert Abela’s position in this conflict has been literally reactionary and blatantly opportunistic. Abela refused to acknowledge that Hamas is a terrorist organisation when asked about them and instead went on a diatribe against European Parliament President Roberta Metsola. It was a very convenient political position as Metsola was being accused by many on the left of being biased towards Israel.
These antics of course further discourage the Israeli leadership from even bothering to care what the international community thinks about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They will have zero effect on the conflict and both Abela and Sanchez know this, but it gives them the opportunity to look important in an international theatre while avoiding their crises at home.
