Just because Alex Borg‘s canvassers and his supporters from the faction of Gozo’s PN stalwart Giovanna Debono want him to be PN leader, doesn’t mean it’s going to happen or that Alex Borg himself is interested in placing a bid. He had admitted that he is a novice and immature for such a role and is more focused on gaining experience and building his network rather than following further political ambitions. Alex Borg gave the right answer and I’m sure he is going to stick with it.
The mere idea that Alex Borg would become PN leader is preposterous and not only because he is a novice in politics. He’s in his twenties. The only meaningful job experiences he has had were modeling (he was also Mister Malta) and as a lawyer with an accounting firm. Hardly anyone takes the idea that he is going to be the PN leader seriously, except for his most devoted supporters and Prime Minister Robert Abela who referred to this prospect in Parliament a couple of months ago.
That was a very bizarre comment to make because the probability that Alex Borg would ever dethrone Bernard Grech is nearly zero, unlike the probability that Robert Abela may be ousted by his own parliamentary group which is by far much higher, especially when money laundering allegations and his involvement in corrupt deals come back to haunt him.
Robert Abela is aware that he has lost major support from within the Labour Party, and he also knows he faces serious risks of being investigated himself. He is fully aware he is in a very weak position and he even sees the slightest challenge against him as a potential threat to his career and future. Seeing Alex Borg debuting his political career so successfully, Robert Abela fears him enough to mention him in Parliament and supposedly expose him for being a potential future PN candidate. It’s all insecurity, fear, and paranoia taken to a new level.
