With the war in Gaza, Pedro Sanchez has found a very convenient diversion to his political crisis back home. If Pedro Sanchez could propose drastic measures on a conflict that is outside the European continent, I would suppose he would be doing even more for the conflicts in his own continent and political family. However, Sanchez is not interested in the Russian invasion of Ukraine because his constituency is mostly pro-Russian. He is also governing with the communists once again, who have only given lip-service support to Ukraine.
Spain’s military aid to Ukraine is minimal and mainly done for official purposes. They know it is the right thing to do to provide military aid to Ukraine, but they do it with the least effort possible in making sure to avoid all supposed risks. Spain wasn’t even committing the required 2% in defence spending according to NATO obligations, something that supposedly Sanchez will remedy this year. There is a lot of media coverage on Spain’s support and aid to Ukraine, but in reality, all this media coverage doesn’t reflect significant material changes on the ground.
Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have died in Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, and there was no unequivocal and strong reaction from Sanchez regarding this fact, unlike the way he is acting in the case of Gaza. In addition, if Sanchez was genuinely concerned about foreign affairs and conflicts, he would have prioritised addressing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by supporting Ukraine in its efforts to win the war against Russia: an effort that is crucially needed for European security.
Today, Pedro Sanchez visited the European Parliament as he faces an umbrage of criticism for his blatant disrespect to the institutions and rule of law at home. He was greeted by the European Parliament President, Roberta Metsola who donned a green dress as a stark reminder of where Sanchez’s priorities should be.
