The Wagner Group and Russian-backed Sudanese paramilitaries, the Rapid Support Forces, have broken a ceasefire with the government and renewed the civil war. The RSF is also backed by the United Arab Emirates and Khalifa Haftar while the government is backed by Egypt. They were preceded by the Janjaweed Militias who committed war crimes in Darfur and in the Sudanese capital city, Khartoum.
Tens of thousands of civilians have fled the city of Wad Madani, a major city roughly 136 km south of Khartoum, as RSF forces have taken control of it. There are reports that the Sudanese military is surrendering to the RSF, which is better equipped and battle-ready.
