Next year the term of the President of the Republic will end and a new President will have to be appointed with a two-thirds majority in Parliament. For Labour Party stalwarts this means that there will be a vacancy available and the race is on by the Labour Party factions to nominate their own person.
So far, three Labour Party stalwarts are eying the Presidency and these are, Helena Dalli (current EU Commissioner for Equality), Karmenu Vella (previous EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs), and Evarist Bartolo (previous Minister for Education and Minister for Foreign Affairs). Karmenu Vella hasn’t made any requests and he is being recommended by Miriam Dalli, the Minister for Energy and the wife of Krmenu Vella’s son, John Vella. Evarist Bartolo is also being promoted by his trusted friends, while Helena Dalli made a direct and explicit request to Robert Abela himself in a conversation between them after also being recommended by her husband, Patrick Dalli.
On the other hand, the Nationalist Party don’t want a Labour Party stalwart as President so all of this lobbying can end up being useless at the end of the day.
