Macron hints at more sophisticated weaponry provisions to Ukraine as France sends 40 SCALP missiles to Ukraine

Last year, France announced it was following in Britain’s footsteps and proceeded with the provision of 40 long-range SCALP (Storm Shadow) missiles to Ukraine. Ukraine has used these missile provisions to successfully hit the Russian navy in the Black Sea and other targets inside occupied Ukraine. Germany is still refusing to donate its long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine.

As France donates its next batch of 40 SCALP missiles to Ukraine, Macron has claimed that France will be providing Ukraine with more sophisticated weaponry and will visit Kyiv in the next month to finalise a security agreement with Ukraine. Macron has also stated that Europe can not allow Russia to win in Ukraine, marking a further hawkish context to his position on Russia than usual.

So far, France is still lagging behind Germany in the volume of military provisions to Ukraine, but Macron has also claimed a reset of his politics in France with the appointment of his new Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal. Ukraine and Russia may also be part of Macron’s “reset”, hence modyfing his position on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

  1. Not sure how exactly Germany has helped Ukraine more than the UK. I keep seeing such numbers but it is unclear what Germany’s contribution is. As for the UK what really has been game-changing were the anti-tank missiles at the start of the war, Stormshadow and one other thing people miss completely – training thousands of Ukrainian soldiers. There are also secretive missions I suspect related to aerial and maritime reconnaissance.
