When in the future we will have independent academic institutions there will be lots of historical/sociological/anthropological studies on how Maltese society got to normalise corruption and even celebrate it. Thanks to the Labour Party we are still in the phase where critique is considered “cruel” and “terroristic” and therefore, we aren’t supposed to discuss what’s wrong in our society unless we do it in a way that no one gets offended and nothing ever changes.
Here’s some “cruelty” about two individuals who have been greasing it from the state for years on end because apparently, we have to be generous and kind to the proletariat by allowing them to engage in corruption and then allow the praise of corruption as a normal way to show gratitude and mark your loyalty. The band conductor David Agius who wrote a band march celebrating Joseph Muscat has been a long-time Labourite and is the head of the Labour Party’s band. His wife, Antonella Agius Micallef, on the other hand, worked for Ian Borg in his ministry and was part of the driving test scandal.
An anthropologist would do well to interview them and ask interesting questions. These people have a very warped view of politics and their country which contrasts from a traditional nationalistic and patriotic perspective. They are probably unable to feel any relation to their nation unless there is the Labour Party involved. They would reason in some warped way that it would be completely acceptable if the nation and society, in general, had to suffer in exchange for the benefit of the Labour Party. It’s a mentality you would find universal in monarchies and dictatorships where one single person or group is privileged in society and can rake in all the privileges from society at the expense of everyone else. Celebrating murderers and corrupt leaders who steal and pillage is normal and acceptable as long as the person stealing is a member of your tribe and party.
