A cold war between the Inland Revenue Department and the FIAU

The story about a money-laundering millionaire taxman under police investigation giving lectures to the FIAU is undoubtedly hilarious and tragic at the same time – a testament to the Jungle Rules state of affairs that we live in. However, there is a deeper reality in this story.

Currently, there is an ongoing cold war between the FIAU and the Inland Revenue Department going back to Marvin Gaerty’s times, about the issue of whether to treat tax absconders as delinquents and tax evaders or by addressing them in mediation efforts. The FIAU wants to treat tax absconders as delinquents while the Inland Revenue Department wants to settle issues by mediation.

This dispute between these entities is not about small businesses or individuals who are late with their tax payments for financial reasons: this dispute is more about big businesses (namely construction gurus) with large tax bills that still need to be paid.

There is also a serious problem of trust between the two entities and they don’t trust each other. They barely do intelligence sharing and they are acting more like competitors of each other instead of cooperating. It’s a very dysfunctional relationship which is also hampering the propensity of the Inland Revenue Department to collect taxes.
