It is high time that Western governments start realising the extent to which rogue and belligerent states are abusing the liberties of the West to conspire and scheme against the West.
Here in this photo, you can see the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of Russia and Iran, Sergey Lavrov and Hossein Amir-Abdollahian meeting in New York at the sidelines of a United Nations Security Council. There are many problems with this.
Iran is currently engaged in a low-key war against US forces in Syria and Iraq through its proxies. Iran has targeted US soldiers in Syria and Iraq with the clear aim to kill them. There is no ambiguity on this.
On the other hand, Russia is engaged in a hybrid war against the West, and has been regularly threatening war against Europe and the US including by firing its nuclear missiles upon us. In addition, Russia has committed a series of war crimes in Ukraine and Syria and so far, no Russian cabinet minister or top official has been held accountable for these crimes.
Then there is another serious problem. Russia is abusing the freedoms of liberal democracy by literally buying our politicians and leaders and creating a network of Russian-allied Western leaders stretching from the US with Donald Trump, extending to Europe with Viktor Orban of Hungary and Robert Fico of Slovakia.
The situation is becoming ridiculous and absurd. We need to have this discussion in Europe and the US most seriously and urgently if we are to preserve our democracies from the Russian threat. Russian apologists will tell you that the West should not escalate, but this is illogical because no escalation can be done by the West while Russia is inviting us to go to war against it.
Western governments are losing their sense of security and the international rules-based order is as fragile as it has ever been.
