Something that the Police in Malta don’t do, as opposed to many other police forces in Europe, is to act as a catalyst and proponent of new laws against crimes. Usually, the police are assisted in this work by the respective attorney-general. It is normal for the police to regularly have new legal requirements that would be needed to fight ever-changing criminal methods.
In fact, there are plenty of individuals in the Police, the FIAU, the Central Bank, the MFSA, and even in the judiciary, along with individuals in other state entities that are quite in agreement with the introduction of a law that addresses undeclared wealth. Only that such a proposal is not supported by the Attorney-General and not by the Labour Party which now wants to reduce the power of the authorities to freeze assets of suspected money launders.
There is in fact, excluding the Police Commissioner and the Attorney-General, a very wide consensus among regulatory and state authorities about the need for the introduction of a law on undeclared wealth. Such a law would go directly against Robert Abela’s interests, and he would never accept it as long as he was in power and for obvious reasons.
