Hungarian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Péter Szijjártó has met his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a widely publicised, official visit to Tehran. The Hungarian Foreign Affairs Minister also signed a trade agreement on agriculture with the Iranian Finance and Economic Affairs Minster.
This is not the first time that Péter Szijjártó visited Tehran to sign trade agreements in what seems to be a growing trading relationship between the two countries. However, this visit comes as a blatant provocation to Europe as it was made following days that Iran committed to export to Russia up to 400 ballistic missiles which will be used against Ukraine. Iran is also the main sponsor of terrorism in its region and one of Russia’s main allies. Currently, the Houthis, an Iranian-sponsored proxy terrorist group have blocked the Red Sea to maritime shipping.
Hungary is fostering a relationship with Iran more to provoke than to obtain economic advantages because these can be easily found elsewhere. However, in the long term, both countries may serve each other as effective platforms that can bypass international sanctions. Hungary is willingly taking the side against Europe and the US by fostering relationships with Iran and Russia, and this type of foreign policy has long been proven to be economically inferior. Hungary could have been much richer if it was a better partner to the West, but it’s the overzealous fascist ideals that primarily inspire the policies of Viktor Orban’s government. Not to mention, the serious security and defense consequences to Europe and the US brought by this bizarre relationship.
