The new mantra by the Labour Party in its warped foreign policy of Russian appeasement is that Malta promotes “peace and social progress”. The reality is that we are viewed as a prime example of an international laundromat and a tax-haven/shell company paradise. We evoke, abroad, no power whatsoever that helps bring either peace or social progress. With Robert Abela as Prime Minister, we are the butt of all jokes.
The deluded government apologists will say that this is just a hyperbolic critique, but it’s true. And if you want more salt in this ugly truth, whenever our government officials or diplomats go to international conferences, they are mostly isolated, because we are fast running out of allies and friends.
Malta has currently, no soft or hard power to influence anything or anyone abroad. After our presidency of the OSCE ends, we will again be missing the occasional headline. The situation could be different if we run our country in an honest way instead of pretending we are something else, focusing on productive economic growth, and building our culture industries. Our country can be much better and influential if we take care of it accordingly.
