As a small nation, having one of our MEPs as the President of the European Parliament is a great honour but also a great national asset that the state could leverage for its interests. The fact that this MEP is also a woman, is also very significant, especially coming from a country where female representation in politics is low. This is not how the Labour Party thinks of Roberta Metsola.
Today, was International Women’s Day and Roberta Metsola is currently touring European universities to encourage students to vote in the European Parliament elections. The President of the European Parliament is engaging in open and public debates with European students where they can raise their concerns and debate European issues. Luckily, for the University of Malta, Roberta Metsola coincided her event at the UOM with International Women’s Day, serving in a way as a stark reminder of what women in politics can achieve. Roberta Metsola has also been extensively celebrated abroad for her work as European Parliament President. She was also the first top European Union leader and politician to visit Kyiv after it was invaded by Russia. She has also been celebrated in Ukraine. Her achievements and stature in the international field are unmatched by any other Maltese politician.
The Labour Party chose to celebrate this event by smearing Roberta Metsola over its media. They also sent a ONE journalist who asked her about irregularities over the Nationalist Party’s finances which are also the same irregularities that plague the Labour Party’s finances, although the Labour Party’s situation is even much more criminal.
Of course, Labour’s devotees of ONE and its propaganda are out in force showing the cultural and intellectual prowess of the Labour Party.
