David Xuereb has resigned as Chairperson of the Occupational Health and Safety Authority following damning conclusions about his incompetence and conflicts of interest in the Jean Paul-Sofia public inquiry. However, the government still finds him fit to keep chairing The Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD).
This week, David Xuereb led Malta’s MCESD delegation in Brussels to the European Economic Social Committee of which the MCESD is a member of its subcommittee. Officials of the European Economic Social Committee have made inquiries with the government on David Xuereb and his status given that he has been discredited by a public inquiry. Basically, they find him untenable to lead the Maltese delegation.
It so happens that the European Economic Social Committee is concerned with workers’ rights and well-being, which amongst the factors and issues include health and safety, so the European Economic Social Committee is very much well-informed about Jean Paul Sofia’s public inquiry. David Xuereb seems to be deluding himself with the idea that whatever happens in Malta, stays in Malta.
