Labour MEP candidate Clint Azzopardi Flores accuses Ursula von der Leyen and Manfred Weber of Nazism and warmongering

Clint Azzopardi Flores has written an article where he accused Ursula von der Leyen, Manfred Weber, and the European People’s Party of being Nazis and warmongers. The Russian security services stationed in Malta can’t be happier that they have their own useful fool among the party of useful fools that want to appease them. Clint Azzopardi Flores wants to be a member of the S&D and is contesting the European Parliament elections.

I’m glad he published this article. Apart from exhibiting a very shallow and myopic view of how the world works, as well as a strong ignorance of history, Clint Azzopardi’s simplistic and reductionist discourse on war, defense, and nuclear weapons is composed of the exact talking points and arguments made by the Kremlin. Chief among these is the argument that Russia invaded Ukraine because the West failed to negotiate with Russia.

Read that argument again and see if it even makes any logical sense. How can you negotiate with an aggressor when the aggressor’s interests, even during negotiations is to destroy you? Unless, and of course, you want negotiations only to appease the aggressor in getting what he wants.ย  Russia and its supporters have always blamed the failure of the Minsk Agreements for invading Ukraine, and after being repulsed from Kyiv, they pretend that they withdrew during negotiations which were later on hampered by the West. This is a strawman argument because diplomacy is about solving genuine conflicts, however here we are dealing with a belligerent and imperialist invasion where there was no previous conflict ongoing before it was stoked and created directly by Russia in its invasion of Donbas in 2014. Fundamentally, being pro-negotiations with Russia means, you want to accede a victory to Russia resulting in their negotiated takeover of Ukrainian land to bring a swift end to the war – this proposal is preposterous, ridiculous, stupid, and strategically not in Europe’s interest.

The Minsk Agreements were already a very appeasing negotiating platform for Russia after they had invaded Ukraine, taken over Crimea illegally, and started a war in the Donbas. Russia broke the Minsk Agreements countless times because Russia was never interested in negotiations or diplomacy in the first place. All of this discourse is just a smokescreen to hide the fact of Russia’s belligerent and imperialist nature: its true interests and aspirations.

No one today in the West goes around blaming the West for the Russian invasion of Ukraine except for the Kremlin-paid propagandists and Russia’s own supporters. No serious historian except the lunatic and the deceptive would ever believe that Russia was provoked or that the West has had any blame whatsoever on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. These facts are very clear and intelligent people who distort these facts should be seen with incredible suspicion.

We are supposedly a democratic, educated, and free society and don’t blame women for getting raped. Equivalently, it is not in Europe’s interest to allow Russia to dictate what countries and nations in Europe should exist or not. This is not about our will for peace, negotiations, or diplomacy. Making a reductionist and stupid argument saying “I don’t agree with nuclear weapons” shows naivety or outright deception. No one likes nuclear weapons and war and we should not allow these stupid and reductionist arguments to subvert our security and way of life.

Russia is subverting Europe from within and its interests are to see a defenseless Europe and a European electorate that is blackmailed easily and fears Russia. Politicians like Clint Azzopardi Flores contribute to Russia’s empowerment and Europe’s disempowerment by selling lies and contorted narratives.

That Europe has a nuclear deterrent is a prerequisite for Europe’s security and it has nothing to do with whether people like war or nuclear weapons. A strong Europe that can withstand nuclear blackmail is a prerequisite for the survival of our democracy and the rule of law. Those like Clint Azzopardi Flores who are spreading lies about the dangers of having a Europe that can defend itself, are themselves the ones who are pushing us into ever greater danger.

  1. Uh, Flores is just another bellicose-Labour-mouth to listen to. Safe to say there is nothing going on behind it.

  3. Mark, thank you for the link to the Clint Azzopardi Flores article and your logical observations in countering his arguments.

In reply to his article, I would also like to add some analogies that might make him understand (not I’m sure) the irresponsibility of his stance.

Let’s start with the context. Europe is being attacked by Putler’s Russian empire’s bullying. Full stop. Period. No two ways about it. Europe did not start this bullying war. Putler did. Please stop blaming the EU. I thought PL were over this game.

An aggressor is attacking my home and is currently breaking down an entry door. Should I sit back in the hope that he will take “just” a couple of ornaments from the room behind the door and leave? Isn’t it even crazy to think that way? I will defend myself and my property with all my might and will hit back – also with all the might I have and can acquire.

Our home is Europe and all our people of goodwill have a moral obligation to defend it or at least support it with all their might – with all our (Europe’s – since Malta has zilch on its own but is still very exposed) defence abilities and those it can acquire. We have a duty to change Malta’s unprotected state of things.

Clint’s first paragraph of his article: To challenge the Nazi Putler we need funds. Oh my god – that’s a surprise! We’ll need to make use of public coffers – oh horror of horrors. I should not request anything from the people whom I am defending since defence comes for free you know. Let’s instead spend money on non violent things – it’s OK if I’m killed in the meantime.

Clint’s second paragraph: QUOTE “Are you in favour of nuclear weapons? It is a simple yes or no. I can tell you that I am against.” UNQUOTE
May I ask him – Are you in favour of knives? It is a simple yes or no. I can tell you that I am sometimes against and sometimes in favour. Would I use a knife in self defence against someone who is trying to kill me? – an emphatic YES I am in favour, as I am not an idiot.

Clint’s third paragraph: Here he is seriously politically blinded and logically infantile and heavily subjective. I would reverse all his arguments and point them to him – in particular his QUOTE “Do read them carefully and study their body language. It gives me shivers down my spine.” UNQUOTE. I am feeling exactly that same thing reading his warped logic.

QUOTE: “Personally, I think they are all politically ruthless and Machiavellian.” Am thinking the same about him and his ilk.

Clint’s fourth paragraph: QUOTE: “It is appalling to have abandoned the negotiations and scrapped such documents. We would have avoided a war, and all the economic hardships that Europeans had to go through in the past two years, along with the lives lost in Ukraine.” Does he know which side abandoned the negotiations? Did he also have access to Putler’s demands for negotiation?

Clint’s fifth paragraph: QUOTE “… the inflated narrative of arming. It has become an arms race.” Oh – so the aggressor is attacking me and I am at fault for trying to equip myself better to defend myself – apologies that the naughty EU seemingly caused an arms race and not holy Putler caused it.

Clint’s sixth paragraph: QUOTE: “Now, how about the Leader of the Opposition? Does he agree to create a nuclear umbrella or whatever it is being called? UNQUOTE.
I absolutely hope the Leader of the Opposition AND the Prime Minister of Malta AND all the elected Maltese MEPs will be in agreement “to create a nuclear umbrella” to defend Europe and should absolutely negotiate to make sure MALTA is geographically protected with this umbrella. I am fed up of living in a floating fool’s paradise and leaving our country open to attack by the crazy nuclear-able Putlers of the world.

This guy Flores should stick to his professional job and stop trying to impress the community displaying his poor intellect about what the EU represents. The basis of his arguments are least to say deficient. Seems he is employed at the Bank of Valletta so best for him to stick to banking and make less a fool of himself?
