Will the police officer who told off this victim get suspended?

It’s good that the press takes up stories of victims when justice fails them. The press is the last and only alternative resort to victims when the authorities fail them.

Michelle De Battista, interviewed by Newsbook, was assaulted by a man in Marsa. She subsequently filed a police report and was told the police wouldn’t be prosecuting against her aggressor because she had no video evidence of the incident.

Weren’t the Police supposedly receiving “education” on how to treat female victims of violence and assault? In fact, Sylvana Gafa, wife of Police Commissioner Angelo, and now even Superintendent, once boasted with the press that the police are now more educated and more equipped to help female victims of assault. Where is she now?

Probably, the police officer who told off Michelle De Battista will stay at the Corps as there have even worse cases of victims being told off. Remember that days before Bernice Cassar was murdered by her ex-husband she filed a police report, told them she was being threatened and that her life was in danger, and the police told her off. After this gruesome incident took place, the government blamed the Bernice Cassar’s death on the “system” – a very convenient way to pin blame on abstract concepts instead of simply firing the police officers who were actually responsible in making sure that Bernice Cassar was to be protected.

Bernice Cassar and Michelle De Battista are not Rosianne Cutajar, so the police wouldn’t be rushing to open criminal cases against their aggressors. Some police officers don’t care and their superiors don’t care that their subordinates don’t care.  Blame it on the system. Sylvana Gafa was supposed to change the Police’s culture and attitudes on women. She failed miserably, and she still got promoted. Anything to promote and reward the Labour Party and its associates, but when it comes to actual victims with no political connections, the victims are mostly on their own.
