Cuba is experiencing its second wave of anti-government protests in its communist history since 2021. Before 2021, there are no recorded anti-government protests. Protests have been held in, Bayamo, Ciego de Avila, Holguin, Santiago and Granma. In response, trucks loaded with food have been sent by the government to East Cuba where most of the protests are taking place.
Cuba is currently experiencing an acute economic crisis with soaring prices, a shortage of goods, and a crumbling public infrastructure. The young generations have had enough and are not interested in living under an oppressive dictatorial regime.
Cuba can freely trade with any country in the world except the US. US sanctions on Cuba also differ from those on Iran. Sanctions on Iran have targeted various sectors, including energy, banking, trade, and technology, with the aim to isolate Iran economically and politically. On the other hand, sanctions on Cuba have been more targeted, focusing primarily on restrictions on trade and financial transactions with the Cuban government and certain individuals and entities. In fact, the EU is Cuba’s second biggest trading partner comprising a total of 20% of Cuba’s external trade. Cuba’s biggest trading partner is China.
