When John Rizzo found out that two of his police officers were working with criminals and forming their own criminal organisation, Rizzo fired them immediately. This was the story of David Gatt, the ex-police officer who was charged for masterminding various criminal heists including the HSBC Qormi hold-up. The Police, under Rizzo’s helm delineated in detail in court how and David Gatt used to behave and express himself to his associates in his organisation, outing him in the process as a criminal mastermind.
Today, David Gatt is still a free man and John Rizzo didn’t have time to complete his task of bringing David Gatt and his associates to justice. David Gatt was not the last police officer to get away with it. Following John Rizzo’s resignation, the only corruption case against Police officers was that about police officers logging in more hours of work then they actually did.
The new Labour Party tradition in dealing with corrupt police officers is to either allow them to retire in silence and enjoy their life, or if they are lucky enough, even get a government job as a tourist guide.
There is very simple reason why Silvio Valletta has never been trialed in court for his collusion with a murderer, and it’s not because of lack of evidence. As a previous government executive who loved the job as a sense of duty, I know the feelings of an honest public servant when they see other public servants betraying their colleagues, the state and their role in a criminal and conspiratorial manner: it’s a deep feeling of utter disgust, so deep that it is highly motivating. For John Rizzo, the very idea that his colleagues would associate with organised criminals made him furious and his indignation about it could be easily seen in his face as he trialed them in court.
No honest police officer would be proud or happy to allow corrupt police officers to aid and cover up criminals, let alone let them get away with it. Today, there is more effort being made by the Police to prevent this website from publishing the truth instead of bringing to justice those who betrayed the state and abetted a murder.
