The Wall Street Journal has revealed that in a summit at the Elysée Palace on February 26th, Emmanuel Macron has told Biden and Scholz that in case Russia engaged with French troops in Ukraine, France would not need NATO’s help. Macron’s comments follow his stronger stance on Russia he has taken publicly as of early this year. It also markers a departure from the restrictive discourse of the West on Russia’s belligerence.
Supposedly, Macron’s decision to send French troops in Ukraine would be triggered in case the Ukrainian front lines collapse and the Russian army advances to Kyiv. The situation on the Ukrainian front lines is not very positive, and so far France has matched its bullish discourse by increasing military aid to Ukraine.
