A NATO summit was held this week in Brussels, bringing together the foreign ministers of member states, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and EU High Representative Kaja Kallas.
The US State Secretary reiterated that the US is committed to stay in NATO but urged all other members to raise defence spending to 5%. Discussions were held about the US moving out its weaponry and forces out of Europe as it seeks to re-deploy its forces to the Indo-Pacific. The US intends to bolster its defence structure and assets in the Indo-Pacific in conjunction with its allies in the region including Japan and the Philippines to prioritise deterrence against an increasingly aggressive China.
During the NATO Summit State Secretary Marco Rubio also urged European leaders to keep purchasing US weapons as European leaders plan to redirect their defence and military investments into European industries.
The prospect of the US pulling out its forces from Europe was already raised previously by the US as part of concessions the US wants to give to Russia in a potential peace agreement with Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron has been warning of similar scenarios since last year.
Uncertainty and disagreements remain between European NATO members and the US over Greenland and Ukraine among other issues such as weapons procurement. The US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth is also set to miss the scheduled Ukraine Defence Contact Group (Ramstein Group) meeting over Ukraine that will be held next Friday in Brussels. The Ramstein Group is a coalition of countries that coordinates weapons provisions to Ukraine.
