Listen to this very educational interview with Russian historian and opposition figure Vladimir Kara-Murza who explains in his soft-spoken manner how Vladimir Putin eventually became a dictator. Vladimir Kara-Murza is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence in Russia after having condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He was also a close friend to Russian Opposition figure Boris Nemtsov who was murdered just outside the Kremlin walls.
In this interview Vladimir Kara-Murza makes two points which I find very noteworthy and important. Firstly, he explains how Vladimir Putin took power in Russia by slowly and gradually capturing state institutions including the public broadcaster which proved crucial for his control of public opinion. He also explains how Putin grew to become more belligerent, violent and authoritarian by time as he further engaged in nefarious and belligerent acts both internationally and domestically without any consequences whatsoever. Eventually, the constant tolerance and impunity enjoyed by Putin, lead him and allowed him to act with even greater boldness and aggressiveness.
