Current Labour Party MEP candidate Steve Ellul will most probably be returning to the government with a new role if he fails to get elected. He is a candidate molded and prepared by Miriam Dalli and her team in her preparation for a bid for the Labour Party leadership, although crises along the way have marred her expectations and perspectives of what it means to be in government. It’s not the same as being an MEP where you simply vote for laws that will hardly affect your political stature in elections.
Steve Ellul was not just the head of Project Green. He was also Miriam Dalli’s closest advisor and supposedly, her most senior technocratic consultant in her political secretariat. Steve Ellul followed and consulted Miriam Dalli on various important and technical matters during the Covid pandemic including on gas purchases and energy subsidies. Supposedly, his experience was because he was a fund manager at Bank of Valletta. Steve Ellul also has a direct responsibility over Miriam Dalli’s massive €1.9 billion recurrent expenditure bill of the Ministry of Energy. And this bill does not include the projects undertaken by Project Green and other capital projects.
At the end of the day this is all Robert Abela’s responsibility and part of the very essence of his government. Apart from the collapse of rule of law that he was adamant to prolong with his actions, the reason why I opposed Robert Abela’s leadership of the Labour Party was that these things were perfectly predictable: rampant incompetence by self-serving ambitious individuals who are playing with our lives.
