“Russian law” in Georgia postponed for Parliament’s vote today at noon

The proposed “Russian law” by the Georgian government has been postponed for parliament’s approval for today at noon after widespread protests in Tbilisi yesterday evening. Protesters blocked the entrances of the parliament’s building and were dispersed with riot police and water cannons. The proposed law is an imitation of Russia’s “Anti-foreign interference bill, which bars and restricts the activities of foreign NGOs in the country.

The Georgian “Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence” was proposed in March last year sparking massive protests in the capital and the postponement of the law. The current government is lead by the Georgian Dream Party which is the largest pro-Russian party in Georgia after having risen in politics as the main opposition party to ย ex-Presidentย Mikheil Saakashvili.
