It’s been two weeks since Inquiring Magistrate Gabriella Vella submitted her inquiry on the Labour government’s fraudulent and corrupt deals wit Vitals and Steward Health Care. Since then this website has been closely following the ongoing activities of the Attorney General and the Police Commissioner in trying to understand the progress on the case, or the lack of it. We have learned a lot since then and our position in these critical times is to remain loyal to the spirit of the Maltese State and rule of law, whilst adhering to the law ourselves whilst conducting in our work.
We have also refrained from divulging details that we have learned throughout these two weeks so as not to compromise the work of diligent prosecutors and police officials who are working with a great sense of loyalty to the State and the rule of law. Throughout these two weeks several mistakes have been made by the Attorney General and the Police Commissioner and we have remained silent whilst being aware that many prosecutors and police officials are not agreeing with the current conduct and behaviour of their superiors and these respectable individuals are working to ensure that the work that is delivered in court is up to standard and at its best.
Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa has held various meetings with Attorney-General Victoria Buttigieg at Admiralty House in the first and second week that the inquiry was submitted. On the other hand, at the Police HQ in Floriana, meetings were held regularly and today Angelo Gafa held various meetings at the Depot during an unusually busy day when the HQ was visited by most top police officers and investigators.
Yesterday’s submission in court by the Attorney-General of a court citation on Joseph Muscat and others came as a shock to many police officers who were prepared to arrest Joseph Muscat given the gravity of the accusations. Yesterday, at night, a top police officer has circulated a message accusing Angelo Gafa of being as guilty as Joseph Muscat for his omission of duties. This is not the first time that top police officers have disagreed with Angelo Gafa’s conduct especially with regards to the impunity that Gafa allowed to Labour Party politicians. Another police officer who was involved in investigating Joseph Muscat and believed that he had enough evidence to arrest him was the previous head of the Financial Crimes Investigations Department, Sandro Camilleri, who was forced to resign in a dispute with Angelo Gafa as Gafa made threatening gestures to him.
Angelo Gafa’s contract is set to expire in June with many of his subordinates wanting him replaced. Gafa clearly intends to stay on to keep paying his mega-loan.
