Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa has refused to arraign Joseph Muscat and his friends in court under arrest. Instead, they have been charged with a court citation and they will be informed when they will have to appear to court. Joseph Muscat was not even interrogated.
Angelo Gafa is using a very soft and lenient procedure against Joseph Muscat on this case compared to the measures used on Keith Schembri, Adrian Hillman, Brian Tonna and Karl Cini over the Pregress Press case, who were actually arraigned in court under arrest. Did Karl Cini’s tears move Gafa sentiments?
Not really. For some time, Robert Abela had made it very clear to Angelo Gafa that he doesn’t want Joseph Muscat arrested. Back then, Robert Abela had made the Party’s top brass aware that he actually communicated this message to Angelo Gafa in order to send, internally, and to Joseph Muscat the message that the he was protecting Muscat. Angelo Gafa is following Robert Abela’s orders diligently and loyally as expected of him. Top Police officers and investigators are not happy with Gafa’s behaviour.ย and are aware that he is protecting political figures. Gafa is being accused by Police officers of being guilty of dereliction of duty, making him by default an abettor and facilitator to organsied crime.
Gafa is also going soft on Joseph Muscat by assigning the case to two Police Officers who are not very experienced with such complex cases, and one of them has just been promoted as Superintendent very recently. This is not a judgment on their character whom I trust are good and well-meaning officers, but this set-up, pales in comparison to the platoon of police officers that was assigned to the Progress Press case which amounted to up to 9 police officers in total.
Also, note that there isn’t Gafa’s signature and neither the Attorney-General’s. This is the most high-profile white-collar criminal case in our history, and the cowards have left this case to be handled by a small number of some of their inexperienced officials. There is hardly an effort in the set-up being built in the case by the Police and the Attorney-General, let alone a show of force. Most importantly, Angelo Gafa doesn’t have any rational or logic that explains why he isn’t arresting Joseph Muscat when he had arrested Keith Schembri over the Progress Press case.
Yet, this is exactly what Robert Abela wanted and he also wants to make sure that we know that he is responsible for Angelo Gafa’s radical change of policy from arresting money-launderers to allowing them to “go home in peace”. In this interview with Lovin Malta, Robert Abela states in a very proud and confident manner, as if he is announcing a decision he has just taken that he’s very proud of, that actually, no one is going to get arrested and “The Establishment won’t be satisfied”.
