If there ever was a class or section of people in this country, who were considered to be the prime examples of “The Establishment” by people like me who have an upbringing and forma mentis of someone brought up from the South, are criminal lawyers. In fact, we used to consider the Nationalist Party of criminal defence lawyers, and hence a party of and for criminals.
Today, Robert Abela has emptied the Labour Party of any ideological and political principles that it had left to turn it into a image of how we perceived the Nationalist Party to be in the past, but on steroids. Readers who are not Labour Party delegates may be surprised to know that when Robert Abela contested the Labour Party leadership he was known and referred to as “The Nationalist.”
In fact, Robert Abela had by then spent his life, acting like a typical Nationalist Party criminal lawyer that we would have hated: raking in money from fraudulent public contracts on one side, and laundering money for criminals on the other side. And most probably, Robert Abela was very much aware that he was trying to emulate the archetypical PN criminal lawyer. His story reminds me of Joseph Muscat who like Robert Abela also grew to emulate “The Establishment” he hated by taking power.
What is a better fact to prove my case here other than reminding readers that Robert Abela chose as his best man for his wedding one of the Nationalist Party’s most popular criminal lawyers: Joe Giglio. It seems like that Robert Abela only hates “The Establishment” when he is losing in his game.
