This is from the news service of the People’s Democratic and Socialist Republic of the Banana. In a radio programme with Newsbook, the officially appointed government-gardener, Jason Micallef just confirmed in public and to the whole world that the government is spying on journalists. He did so proudly and by bragging that a Labour Party informant was behind Newsbook’s journalist, Monique Agius during Joseph Muscat and Charlon Gouder’s press conference as he took photos of her mobile screen.
Jason Micallef proudly showed photographs of the journalists’ mobile screens to the interviewer, Andrew Azzopardi, loudly bragging about the government’s capability of knowing with whom journalists are communicating.
There are dictatorships where repression is subtle and even taboo. Then there are dictatorships where repression is celebrated publicly. I guess we are part of the latter.
