Yesterday, I had a long and rather personal conversation with the sacked head of the Financial Crimes Investigations Department, Sandro Camilleri. I will keep our personal conversation between us and confidential, however he also told me something which is of public interest that I will share with my readers.
Sandro Camilleri told me that in his career, he has arrested many suspects charged with money-laundering on less serious accusations. He made it clear to me that Joseph Muscat and the others charged on the Vitals and Steward case should have been arrested and taken in for a statement. In such a scenario, bail would have been demanded by the suspects so as to stay out of jail pending their trial while travel restrictions would have been imposed on them.
Today, after having been sacked by Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa, Sandro Camilleri works at the Social Housing Department and is doing private practice work as a lawyer.
