The European People’s Party has come out as the strong overall and European winner of the European Parliament elections. The surge of far-right candidates came mostly from France, Germany and Italy with the rest of Europe voting mostly for the centre. The centre-right and the EPP are the overall winners of these elections.
Basically, we are now at the stage that the European Parliament is divided into three sections with these being the centre-right, the centre-left and the far-right that has gained more prominence than the liberals or the Greens and the far-left combined.
The EPP has added 13 seats in total with 189 seats in total, the centre left S&D (Socialists and Democrats) lost 4 seats with 135 seats in total. The pro-European and liberal Renew Europe lost 23 seats with 79 seats in total. The European Conservatives and Reformists, who are Viktor Orban’s party of choice, gained 4 seats with 73 seats in total. The far-right Identity and Democracy gained 9 seats with 58 seats in total. The Greens lost 18 seats with 53 seats in total. The far-left lost a seat with 36 seats in total.
The pro-Russian and pro-Assadist Clare Daly from Ireland failed to get elected. Yannis Varoufakis failed to get elected as well.
Now, a complex political and multi-party and multi-member state negotiation process will kickstart to elect the President of the European Commission and appoint the Commissioners. Roberta Metsola is earmarked to once again take the position of European Parliament President.
