Hungary’s party-in-government lead by Viktor Orban, Fidesz, has won the absolute majority of votes in the European Parliament elections garnering up to 53% of the Hungarian vote. However, its MEPs have remained without a political group in the European parliament after they have failed to join the European Conservatives and Reformists. They are blaming their decision on a Romanian political party called the Alliance for the Union of Romanians which has also joined the ECR.
In 2022 the Hungarian Parliament adopted a Fidesz-lead resolution that called for the dismantling of the European Parliament. Fidesz was kicked out of the European People’s Party, the largest political group in the European parliament, in 2019.
