Ian Borg meets President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, as OSCE Chairman

Ian Borg, Foreign Affairs Minister and currently, OSCE Chairman, was in Almaty, Kazakhstan yesterday as he met with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Senate leader, and the Chairman of the Constitutional Court, among others, to discuss the OSCE Action Plan for Kazakhstan. Ian Borg also met civil society organizations and youth groups.

The OSCE is aiding Kazakhstan in a raft reforms over the rule of law and human rights, such as most recently, a law passed in April that criminalises the violence against women and children.

Kazakhstan seems to have a very good relationship with the OSCE, showing extensive engagement with the organisation. The OSCE is the only international organisation of which Kazakhstan is a member alongside Western states. Under President Kassym Komart Tokayev, Kazakhstan has made many significant advances in strengthening its relationships with the West and reducing its dependency on Russia.
