According to official government figures only 49.8% of eligible voters voted in Iran’s Presidential elections. The Iranian opposition which boycotted the elections claim that the turnout was much lower. Despite the lower turnout the only “moderate” candidate in the list, Masoud Pezeshkian won the elections.
Masoud Pezeshkian was Minister of Health under the presidency of Mahammad Khatami who is known to have been the last “reformist” Iranian President. He also vowed to remain loyal to the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Previous Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash last May.
