In his first speeches following the victory of Nouveau Front Populaire in France’s National Assembly elections, leader of the communist La France Insoumise party, has claimed that the left is ready to govern. He has also claimed last month during the election campaign that he is ready to become Prime Minister.
French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal who forms part of President Macron’s party has resigned and a new Prime Minister will have to be chosen by the President among a new cabinet that reflects the composition of the National Assembly.
Jean-Luc Mélenchon is popular for his uncompromising attitude within French politics and given his hardline stance on many policies and issues (he is also anti-NATO), it is highly unlikely that the left will agree on a cabinet let alone a Prime Minister, giving Macron leeway in negotiations. Given the strong divergences in the left’s coalition, it is also highly unlikely that new major reforms or changes of policy will be passed by legislation.
